Artist Biography :

Born in 1946 Artist  Tajul Islam graduated in Fine Arts  (Oriental  Art) from Institute of Fine Arts,  Dhaka(presently Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka) in  1968 and completed his MFA from University of Chittagong in 1974. As a student of art, he began assisting Rashid Chowdhury when the latter returned from France and introduced his tapestry studio in 1965. Tajul continued assisting his mentor till 1979. After the death of artist Rashid Chowdhury, Tajul is one of the very few who are still working with this expensive and laborious medium. He served in BJMC from 1979–2002 and also served one-year under the PACI, Oman.

Tajul has held 10 solo art exhibitions and several group art exhibitions at home and abroad. He has participated in professional training in Proleter carpet factory in Yugoslavia and took part in several international art fairs at Harrow Gate International Carpet Fair, UK in 1984, International Carpet and Rug Market Fair at Atlanta, USA in 1987 and International Autumn Trade Fair at WTC at Dubai, UAE in 2016. Tajul has been awarded with the ‘Special Prize’ in BATA International Art Competition in 1983, ‘The Best Producer’ of jute diversified product for the year 2007-2008 by JDPC under the Ministry of Textile & Jute GPRB and ‘The Best Entrepreneur’ of JDP 2010 under Ministry of Textile & Jute GPRB in 2012. In many works, Tajul Islam has proved his uniqueness, particularly in terms of design and color composition.  Islam has given more focus on design than figures. Although influenced by traditional art,  he experiments more with the forms of flora and fauna.  His works have been collected by numerous private collectors, private banks, art galleries and Bangladesh National Museum, as well as many national and international organizations.  A total of 38 tapestry works will be displayed at the exhibition.
